A tap must be have its rotation reversed to safely remove it from a hole with out damaging the threads or breaking the tap. There are several different styles. An auto-reversing chuck has a mechanical clutch which reverses the direction of the tap without reversing spindle direction. A floating tapping chuck has built in axial float to accommodate reversal of the spindle direction.
