Encoders : Optical Encoder

An encoder is is any device or method used to translate information from one format to another. In the case of machinery systems, encoders are typically used to convert transducer signals measure position and orientation to a signal that is sent to a processed by a control system. An optical encoder is a type of rotary encoder used to measure rotational location. Optical encoders usually use a slitted or glass encoder disc. Light is directed at the encoder disc and a photodiode is used to detect the light and report location.
