Coating Thickness Gage

A coating thickness gage is a measurement device used to measure the thickness of films or coatings applied to other materials. There are many different types of thickness gages, using both destructive and non-destructive methods. Among the options for thickness measurements are magnetic gages, eddy current techniques, micrometers, ultrasonic probes, and gravimetric techniques in which pre- and post-coating masses and volumes are used to compute an average coating thickness. The most popular coating thickness gage for metal parts are magnetic gages, in which the gage measures the force required to pull the magnetic lead off of the part in order to compute the thickness of the coating.
